Instructor Certification

CCKEVM encourages its members interested in becoming instructors for the club to undergo the leader and instructor training according to the recommendations of Canoe-Kayak Canada (CKC). This training consists of several modules and can be completed by combining multiple modules. To become certified as a whitewater instructor (I2), the training is typically conducted over two weekends, followed by a half-day evaluation.

  • Pool Instructor
  • Lake Instructor (I1)
  • River Leader (L2)
  • River Instructor (I2)
  • Whitewater Leader (L3)
  • Whitewater Instructor (I3)

 

Prerequisites

  • Be 16 years of age or older
  • Master teaching skills in flatwater and/or whitewater
  • Consistent and reliable eskimo rolling skills
  • Have an interest and skills related to teaching and group management
  • Successful completion of a KEV4 course is no longer a requirement (old program)

 

To teach river kayaking courses, the instructor must also have a valid Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification and must have completed the Swiftwater Rescue (SWR) course. CPR and SWR are not included with the instructor training.
